What can I expect at the assessment?
At Brain & Language Connections, all assessments are completed by a qualified and experienced Speech Pathologist. The length of an initial assessment depends on the child and the presenting problem. While a speech/articulation assessment is generally completed in one session, more comprehensive assessments take between two and three sessions to complete.
At Brain & Language Connections we use an extensive range of the most up-to-date assessment tools to thoroughly evaluate your child's skills. Our assessments determine the cause of your childs behaviours, rather than only observing the symptoms. A parent or caregivers perspective plays a critical part in the assessment process. You may be asked to complete a questionnaire either at the time of the assessment, or prior to it. The questionnaire will provide the Speech Pathologist with additional background information about your child's strengths and weaknesses. Copies of relevant reports (i.e. audiologist, psychologist, teacher, paediatrician) may also be requested. All of these factors are important in gaining a clear perspective of your child's skills, in order to provide the most effective therapy program.
What happens after the assessment?
Once the assessment process has been completed, the Speech Pathologist will arrange a time to meet with you. At this post-assessment consultation, you will receive a copy of your childs report (if requested) detailing the assessment results, strengths and weaknesses, recommendations for therapy and/or programs, and information on each of the recommended programs. We do not charge extra for this consultation.
Copies of the report can also be sent to your childs GP, school/kinder or other professionals at your request and authorisation. We are happy to consult with teachers and other specialists working with your child, as needed. Further testing by other professionals (i.e. audiologist, psychologist, paediatrician or occupational therapist) may be recommended.
